Why stay in Barra Grande - Advantages
Barra Grande is undoubtedly the reference point for tourism in the region, with the most complete infrastructure on the Maraú Peninsula. Barra Grande has the highest concentration of pousadas and hotels, restaurants and bars, shopping and nightlife of any village or beach on the Maraú Peninsula.
For these reasons, Barra Grande is the first choice of accommodation when visiting the region for the first time. In fact, if you stay in one of the pousadas in Barra Grande, especially in the Vila (center), you don't even need a car. You can walk from your pousada to the beach, eat at a restaurant in the Villa, do some shopping and enjoy the nightlife, without walking 500 meters all day!!!
Another advantage of Barra Grande is that there are several beaches and you can visit them all in one visit. Surrounded by two bodies of water, to the west is Camamu Bay, with the beaches of Barra Grande and Ponta do Mutá, which have calm, warm waters. To the east is the Atlantic Ocean, with its bigger waves, coral reefs and natural pools. These beaches are a little further away from the center of Barra Grande, and include Praia de Três Coqueiros and Praia de Bombaça.
Tips if you want to stay in Barra Grande
- The preferred way to get to Barra Grande is by road to Camamu, followed by a speedboat to Barra Grande. See our Barra Grande and Maraú transfer page.
For those coming by car, you can park in Camamu and book the speedboat ticket online, for the same price as at the counter. - You generally don't need a car when you stay in Barra Grande.
- Almost everything is within walking distance, and there are jardineiras and taxis when you need to go further afield... the pools at Taipu de Fora, for example.
- Don't forget to withdraw money before you arrive, as there is no 24-hour bank here. Almost all of them accept cards or PIX, but it's always good to have cash!

Advantages of staying on Taipu de Fora Beach
Taipu de Fora is considered one of the most beautiful beaches in Brazil, and for good reason. White sands, crystal-clear waters and natural pools are the main attractions, offering diving lessons or mask, snorkel and fins rental. Taipu de Fora is also an open ocean beach... great for those who prefer to enjoy waves and surfing! There are several good restaurants open during the day, including Buda Beach and the famous Bar das Meninas, but few options at night.
By day, Taipu de Fora has become one of the busiest beaches on the peninsula. At night, however, it becomes peaceful and idyllic... perfect for a good night's rest. If you're lucky enough to stay here during the full moon, you'll remember it forever!
The pousadas in Taipu de Fora are excellent, and almost all of them have restaurants offering three meals a day.
Nowadays Taipu de Fora is not as isolated as it used to be. It now has markets and stores, with more restaurants and bars open at night. If you want to spend the day or enjoy the nightlife in Barra Grande, it's easy. Just take one of the jardineiras that run every hour during the day, or call one of the many taxi drivers who work in the area.

Tips for staying on Taipu de Fora Beach
- The best way to get to Taipu de Fora is usually via Camamu, followed by a speedboat to Barra Grande.
- When you arrive in Barra, you can take a jardineira or a cab from the pier to your accommodation in Taipu de Fora.
- This route can also be taken directly from Ilhéus via a dirt road, but it depends on the condition of the Br-030 (dirt road).
- Taipu also doesn't have a bank, but most places accept PIX or cards, but a good tip is to take some cash.
- Taipu de Fora has fewer taxi drivers, and people staying in Taipu de Fora may choose to rent an ATV for a day or two.
- If you want to enjoy the natural pools, buy your own mask and snorkel kit before you arrive!
- Taipu has fewer options for buying groceries, but it's better to buy in Barra Grande, which has more options and is generally cheaper.

Advantages of staying in Cassange/Saquaira
To the south of Taipu de Fora are Cassange Beach and Lagoon, Ponta da Baleia, and Saquaira Beach, which are ideal beaches for those who want to isolate themselves in the middle of nature and more deserted beaches. Accommodation in Cassange and Saquaira is mainly of the “resort” type, in the sense that it has all the amenities you need to relax, without the need to leave the property all the time.
Cassange has an interesting feature apart from the beautiful nature... the Atlantic Ocean on one side, and the beautiful freshwater Cassange Lake on the other. The lake is perfect for children or for taking a peaceful canoe, kayak or stand-up paddle, or simply enjoying the sounds of nature without any reminders of civilization.
The typical accommodations in Cassange and Saquaira are beachfront bungalows, a swimming pool, a good restaurant and activities for adults and children. Some even organize trips without having to go to Barra Grande, including quad bike rentals and speedboat rides. Examples of these properties include Pousada Lagoa do Cassange, Sítio da Bia in Saquaira, Butterfly House and Terraços Marinhos.
Advantages of staying in Algodões
Algodões Beach is an excellent option for those who want to enjoy a beautiful beach without the hustle and bustle of the more commercialized beaches. Like Taipu de Fora, Algodões also has its natural pools at low tide, ideal for families with children. Algodões is more like an upscale neighborhood because of the summer houses, whose owners come from all over Brazil, Europe and North America.
You won't find any resorts or large hotels in Algodões, but the pousadas in Algodões are small and good, with tasteful owners. For those who want to stay in Algodões, it's always good to book in advance due to high demand and limited space during certain times of the year.
Algodoes has several good restaurants, a grocery store and several cozy beach huts. Algodoes beach has always been and continues to be an excellent option for families looking for a beautiful beach without the crowds of Taipu de Fora and the nightlife of Barra Grande.
Tips for those staying in Cassange, Saquaira or Algodões
- Anyone interested in staying in this part of the peninsula should take into account the condition of the BR-030 road and plan their transportation in advance. If the road is in good condition, you can opt for a private transfer from the airport, hire a car, or drive your own car. If the road is not good, it's best to arrive by private transfer with a driver who knows the conditions, or by 4 x 4 vehicle.
- Bring your basic necessities from home, such as medicines, sunscreen, insect repellent, etc. This way you'll avoid a trip to Barra Grande just to find a simple necessity.
